What Causes White Patch In Throat?

default
Posted on Wed, 25 Nov 2015
Question: I developed a white patch in my throat 3 months ago it changes shape occasionally looks better someday than others very painful. Only way to stop pain is to let my percocet dissolve in the back of my throat I am prescribed for my back nothing else will stop the pain. Doctor says in turn this irritates it and won't let it heal acting as an irritant. I have also been experiencing severe sinus pain and clear gel like drainage. The patch on my throat has been cultured comes back as nothing no infection fungus, cancer ect.

Brief Answer:
Granular Pharyngitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. It will be better if you upload a closeup image of the throat.

2. Most likely this will be an area of inflamed lymphoid (tonsil like) tissue normally present in the throat.

3. A Post Nasal Drip ( PND) and Chronic Sinusitis lead to this situation.

4. Hence a full course of antibiotics, anti allergic, mucolytic, anti inflammatory (including steroid) medication with medicated gargles, anti reflux medication and steam inhalation should settle this.

5. If this persists, intravenous medication should be given. A plain Sinus CT Scan and cauterization (chemical / radiofrequency / coblation) of the patch may be done. A biopsy is also indicated.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Do you have any recommendation on what I can use to stop the pain caused from the throat tissue rather than dissolving Percocet in my throat.?

Brief Answer:
Brufen and Mucaine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Take an OTC painkiller containing ibuprofen (unless you have a history of asthma). Such a tablet should be taken after meals twice a day (not more than 3 days at a stretch).

2. Two tablespoons of Liquid Mucaine Gel/Suspension thrice a day will help.

3. If this does not help after a couple of doses, seek medical attention.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

Brief Answer:
That is a severe pharyngitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. That is a severe pharyngitis, a post nasal drip with a large membranous mucus patch in the image.

2. This means you need to have a full course of medication as mentioned in my first response. Only painkillers will not help.

3. Kindly seek medical attention for this condition, get a throat examination, throat swab and blood tests done. Get a full prescription, adequate fluids and rest.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

You have been very helpful. Thank you for continuing answering my questions. I am currently on omnicef 300mg twice daily for ten days. Also gave me 160mg depo-medrol shot followed by a prednisone pack to take orally. Does this sound sufficient to you?

Try an OTC oral rinse.

Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. A medicated oral rinse containing either povidone iodine (such as Betadine) or chlorhexidine (such as Peridex or Hexidine) will be better.

2, Dilute with an equal quantity of water. Use 30ml of the diluted mixture for 30 seconds.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
