What Causes Warm Sensation On Head While On Lotensin And Depakote?

Posted on Mon, 12 Oct 2015
Question: I am experiencing a strange sensation at least once per day. It starts with a warm sensation that fills my head. This causes an easily perceived flushness of my face and ears and my eyes become bloodshot. Strangers have even commented on it. The other symptoms that are very noticeable to me are a heaviness of the arms and a strange, almost tingling feeling in my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I am fairly overweight, but not diabetic. I take 1500mg of Depakote daily for bipolar II and I have hypertension, adequately addressed with Lotensin. My doctor has run a number of blood tests and can't identify a cause.

Brief Answer:
It could be due to the drug Lotensin.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir, Hi
Good morning.

I appreciate your concern for the warm sensation associated with flushness of face, ears and the eyes.

I have gone through the problem described in your query.
It seems to me that apparently you have some sort of allergic reaction to the drug Lotensin.

Flushing, warmth feelings, redness, tingling sensation associated with tired feelings (heaviness of the arms) are suggestive of the side effects of the BP lowering medicine Lotensin (Benzapril which is an ACE-inhibitor).

Other side effects associated with the use of ACE inhibitor like Losentin include dry cough, swelling of the eye lids, face and the lips.

I, therefore advise you to consult your treating doctor to review the prescribed medication and to use an alternate but safer medicine like Losartan or Irbesartan for effective control of high BP.

Hope the explanation given above could be useful to you.

Should need to clarify more doubts, please feel free to send your follow-up query.

Best regards.

I somehow forgot to mention that I have stage 3 chronic kidney disease (as a result of 20 years on Lithium and regular use of naproxen). I know my doctor takes my kidneys into account whenever prescribing medicine, but I wonder if this plays into the whole scenario.

Brief Answer:
Losentin is effective in patients with kidney disease.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir, Hi
Good evening!

Thanks for your kind information.
Losentin in fact has got beneficial effects in the setting of chronic kidney disease. But the side effects are bound to occur in the form of flushing, warmth sensation, tingling sensation as experienced. These effects are due to accumulation of bradykinin which is responsible for the such reaction.

Hope to have clarified your doubts.

Best regards.
