What Causes Vomiting, Diarrhea And Stomach Cramps?

default
Posted on Sat, 21 Jun 2014
Question: Hello. My on Tuesday May 19 my husband woke up at 5am throwing up. He continued to get sick for the next 24 hours but then stopped on Wednesday which was followed by 2 days oh diarrhea. He has had stomach cramps the entire time and has had nothing but water and gatorade, and a few small bowls of applesause since Tuesday. He now has had non-stop cold sweats for the last 12 hours. Could this be just a bad case of the flu or is it something more serious? He has no other health issues but he does smoke cigarettes.

Hello.

Thank you for the query.

As he is a young person nothing serious should not be the reason. This sounds like typical gastrointestinal infection. Such infection should not last longer than 48 hours. As his main symptoms are now gone, it seems that infection is going away.
I suggest him to rest, have plenty of fluids and take some paracetamole for sweats. If he will be better day by day, its nothing serious.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.

Regards

Hello again. Thank you for the quick reply. He won't eat anything but he did ask if Jello would be ok. Is this something that would be good for him? I'm obviously just trying to avoid taking him into the emergency room if all he needs to do is eat.

Detailed Answer:
Jello is fine. It will take some time before his appetite will be back. He should start from liquid diet (warm soup is really good) adding foods gradually. Boiled chicken, banana, rice are also good in his situation. He should also start probiotic intake.

Is there liquid over the counter probiotic? I'm sure this is something I can ask for pharmacist. I'm just starting to feel very badly for him. He's so out of it. Thank you!

Detailed Answer:
Yogurt is a liquid probiotic. Just make sure it contains bacteria. Pharmacy should also have a liquid form. All are OTC.
