What Causes Visible Veins On The Top Of The Feet?

Posted on Fri, 28 Apr 2023
Question: My feet seem to show prominent bluish blood vessels near the ankles and on top of the foot. I have had a job that required to be on my feet for many years. I have no pain or swelling in the feet. It's the vascular appearance that seems to be increasing. Does taking baby aspirin play into this? Thanks

Brief Answer:
These are spider veins and telangiectasias. Don't worry.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

What you are describing are spider veins and telangiectasias.

These are normal variants and very common in women above 40 years of age. Some get them on their calves, some on thighs and some on feet or ankles. There is nothing to worry about as they will not give you any problems except for cosmetic appearance.

Aspirin can only increase chances of minor bleed if by chance you injure any of these veins. There is no need to stop the medicine however as it would have been started for your heart.

Just don't worry.

You can wear compression stockings so that they don't increase in size. Otherwise, nothing else is needed.

Hope I have answered your query.
