What Causes Vaginal Bleeding During Menopause?

default
Posted on Wed, 9 Nov 2016
Question: I am basically in menopause with a period about once or twice a year for several years. Then went on a high soy diet and my period returned. Light but for a very long time. Stopped the diet and eventually period stopped. Now onto a different diet where i am not eating soy. Seems like every time i loose a bit of weight my period returns very light for an extended period of time. Not sure the reason.

Brief Answer:
Fix appointment with your Gynecologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns.

I read your notes carefully. So I understand that you are getting light period which lasts for a long time.

From what you have written it appears like this is not your period. It is erratic vaginal bleeding. There are several reasons for this:

- inflammation of the thin lining of vagina (atrophic vaginitis)
- thinning of the lining of uterus ( endometrial atrophy)
- vaginal infection. From your notes it is clear that you do not have infection.
- polyp ( cervical or endometrial). Polyps are growths from the lining of uterus. These can cause cramps
- In about 10 % of women presenting with this symptom it could be due to precancerous or cancer conditions of uterus.

Therefore it is extremely important that you have internal examination , ultrasound of uterus and ovaries, and endometrial biopsy ( if lining of uterus is thick) to find out the cause for this light prolonged bleeding.

So please fix an appointment with the Gynecologist. It is important that you fix an appointment with the Gynecologist at the earliest.

Remember that in 9 out of 10 women the cause is not serious. It is only in 1 in 10 women that the cause is serious.
If all the above causes are ruled out, then we can attribute the above bleeding to your period bleeding. Rarely priod bleeding can present like this due to hormonal variations.Your doctor will prescribe medicine to reduce the duration of bleeding.

I hope this helps. If you have further concerns, do write to me. I will be happy to answer.

Best wishes,
Dr Rama

Thank you. Is it odd that it only happens when i am dieting and losing weight? I read somewhere that your belly fat stores estrogen and when you lose weight it is released. Or is that false. But yes, i will make an appointment.

Brief Answer:
With weight loss, fat cells are reduced and there is no extra estrogen.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.

It is false. Fat cells produce extra estrogen. So when you lose weight, fat cells are reduced and there is no extra estrogen released.

I hope this is helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr Rama
