What Causes Vaginal Bleeding After Intercourse?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Jul 2015
Question: I had sex with my wife last night and began to bleed quite a bit from my vagina. Apparently there are two tears on the outside. I stopped and showered, there was blood all over me and her. Blood every time I go to the bathroom but not a lot. We assessed the area with gauze this morning and it appears to also be coming from inside of the vagina although not a lot and it is getting darker. I feel like cramping in my lower abdomen but I have NO FEMALE ORGANS (S/P Hysterectomy 2009). With the bleeding slowing can I avoid the doctor?

Brief Answer:
You can avoid visit if bleeding stops.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The bleeding in the vagina can be due to injury to the vaginal wall due to dryness post menopause. If the bleeding is gradually decreasing then it will slowly stop and the small tears will heal on their own in next 7-10 days. But this is a fresh bleeding from the tears. In case the bleeding persists after 48 hours then you need to consult a gynecologist for a physical examination. In case of heavy bleeding perineal repair may be needed. Avoid having any sex till completely healed.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Should I have any increased concern if the bleeding increased slightly after bearing down slightly while using the restroom? Thank you so much for your response.

Brief Answer:
It is better to get it examined.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
If the bleeding has increased on bearing down then a tear high up in the vagina is possible. It is better to get yourself examined instead of letting the blood loss to happen.
Hope my answer is helpful.
