What Causes Urinary Urgency And Abdominal Pain While Treating UTI?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Apr 2017
Question: I recently had a UTI. Although the initial lab test was negative, my doctor prescribed Septra based on the symptoms, including urinary urgency, frequency, burning with voiding, and achy lower abdomen. My symptoms were relieved within a couple of days. I finished the course of antibiotics and didn't give it much further thought. The doctor's office called today and told me my culture came back positive for klebsiella oxytoca. Out of curiosity, I looked into it, and it seems that healthy adults tend not to get this infection. Should I be concerned that I may have an undiagnosed condition that is compromising my immune system?

Full disclosure, no great XXXXXXX that I would be exposed to this bacteria, as I work in an assisted living building, where such an infection is likely to spread.

Brief Answer:
no...

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Klebsiella oxytoca is more frequently seen in hospitalized patients. It's not linked to immunocompromised hosts, so there are no concerns for your immune system. It's very likely that you were colonized by moving in the assisted living building. Such areas have similarities with hospitals regarding the flora of the inhabitants.

Since the antibiotic treated the pathogen, you shouldn't be worried.

Kind regards!
