What Causes Urinary Incontinece And Prostate Issues?

Posted on Thu, 22 May 2014
Question: My brother has protein in his urine analysis and I am concerned about kidney disease. I just had a urine analysis on Monday and urine was clean. I also had blood work done on April 12th, my creatinine was a little high at 1.34. The BUN was 13.4 and my EGFR was a little low at 54. Back in late January I had abdominal ultrasound, Ct Scan and MRI. They all found several cysts, but the radiologist, my doctor and the GI did not note any concern. I do not have urine issues, except a couple weeks ago I appeared to have prostate issues and had urge to urinate after I did urinate. Turned out I do not have prostatitis. What should I look for in symptoms? I am currently having some leg pain and got some muscle cramps after running a short distance on the treadmill.

Brief Answer:
cystic kidney disease

Detailed Answer:
hi XXXXXXX

You are having High serum Creatinine. This shows that definitely you have underlying kidney disease. You have said that there are cysts in kidney. These can be simple cysts which appear with aging or can be part of familial polycystic disease. I need to review your Ultrasound or CT report to comment on this.

Urge of urination can be part of BPH. Prostate enlargement can cause compression of urethra. Ultrasound is a good modality to see prostate enlargement and medicines can improve your symptoms.

in view of urinary abnormality in your brother and presence of multiple cysts in both kidneys ,the possibility of familial kidney disease like ADPKD can not be ruled out.

You should see your sodium potassium calcium and uric acid levels . and keep a regular check of your blood pressure.

Early kidney disease do not have any symptoms. Back pain and muscle weekness can be part of kidney disease.

in-case any further query write in.

Best wishes

Dr XXXXXXX my potassium, calcium and uric acid are normal, these were on the same blood test with creatinine. Also, no protein in my urine from yesterday. My blood pressure is normally 122 over 80. My BUN is normal. The muscle pain started about 5 days ago. I read where some creatinine levels are normal at 1.3 and mine is 1.34. If you think I have kidney disease, what is my next strp? Also, when I took my blood test, I was on Bactrim. Would that cause a slight elevated creatinine? And,I had a vigorous workout 2 days prior.

Brief Answer:
mild kidney disease

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Bactrim, though rare, can cause increase in serum creatinine. Vigorous exercise can increase serum creatinine. It is worth repeating serum creatinine at weekly interval for a couple of times. To confirm the trend and the values. But definitely 1.3 is in higher range.

Next step is OPD visit to a nephrologist and regular 3 monthly monitoring.

Also give importance to other facts like polycystic kidney and prostate that need to be investigated.
