What Causes Upset Stomach, Burping And Constipation?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Feb 2015
Question: I have had an upset stomach for the last week. I have a constant need to burp and i can feel my stomach churning when im lying down. I have had three attacks of diahrea, and some constipation, but a lot of wind. I thought it may perhaps be my body reacting to a lot of drinking over New Years and not much food, but now after 7 days with little improvment, im wondering whether it may be some sort of stomach bug? The soreness is quite high, just below the centre of my rib cage. Have had no vommiting. Just some diarreah back on the first few days, followed my constipation and i feel like i have too much gas in my stomach seeing im constantly burping it up. Stomach virus?

Brief Answer:
It does sound likely, but may require confirmation

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Yes, a stomach bug could quite be possible, but this can only be confirmed with a few more details and possibly even a stool analysis at a hospital. But first, I would request you to write back to me with a little more information on the following questions and may be we can even skip the stool analysis to find a more immediate solution.

+Do you remember when exactly your symptoms began? If so, could you tell me what you had to eat 2-6 hours prior to the beginning of your symptoms?

+If you do manage to remember what you had 2-6 hours prior to the appearance of the first symptom, could you tell me the source of the food? (e.g. home food, food at a restaurant/bar, etc.)

+Have you had a temperature at any point of time?

+Could you describe the consistency of your stools? Foul-smelling? How many times a day?

+The diarrhoea was followed by constipation yes? And now? What are you experiencing diarrhoea or constipation or your stool has returned to normal?

So its been 8 days since the beginning of your symptoms, which should be enough time for your stomach bug to resolve on its own. But in the meantime, I would like you to consider the following suggestions ma'am:

+Drink plenty of water: Dehydration is the main cause for hospital admissions with stomach bugs
+Get your hands on some OTC oral rehydrations solutions (ORS) or powders. If you manage to get only the powder, mix 1 XXXXXXX with 1 litre of water and finish it the same day. Have at least 1-2 litres of the ORS per day
+You should also be able to purchase an OTC probiotics (G-NORM, SPOROLAC, etc.). Request your pharmacist for any probiotics and they should work just fine
+OTC antacid syruop (e.g. TUMS, GELUSIL, etc.). 2tbsp to be taken three times a day before each meal
+Tablet to reduce the gastric irritation and the flatulence and abdominal bloating. Containing the active ingredients ranitidine or omeprazole or lansoprazole
+Avoid spicy, fatty, fried, oily food for at least the next 10 days
+Preferably a liquid diet for the next week (e.g. soups, porridge, etc.)

I look forward to hearing from you further in order to help you further. Do not worry, I am sure you will be fine soon. I would also like to add that if not the stomach flu, this could be either alcoholic intoxication or possibly peptic ulcer disease (due to an increased amount of alcohol intake on a close to empty stomach). Although those two diagnosis's are unlikely, they are to be considered if the stomach bug is ruled out.

Either way, please follow my suggestions and kindly write back to me with your approximate response and I would be more than happy to help you further.

Best of luck and wishing you a speedy recovery ma'am.
