What Causes Upper Back Pain Post Physical Therapy For Rotator Cuff Impingement?

Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Yes, I've been going to PT with rotator cuff and impringement of the right shoulder. Thursday after a PT session as I was leaving I began having pain in upper back. As the day progressed I had pain under breast. Saw my therapist Friday and she did U/S and manipulation upon feeling the spasms . It has subsided somewhat. The pain under breasts has gone away, however I feel spasm and very much soreness, in back and chest. I've also had a low grade fever anywhere from 99.5-100.1. Is the fever from inflammation? I've also had a cough and runny nose. Thank you. XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You seem to have got a common cold, a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have carefully gone through the details that you have mentioned. I do not think that the inflammation related to your rotator cuff impingement is responsible for the soreness that you are feeling. Rather it is more probable that you have got a viral infection which can present with cough, muscle pain and fever or feverishness. I would insist you to take paracetamol/acetaminophen. It will take care of both the muscle soreness and the raised temperature. Also take steam inhalation. Water in the form of vapour will reach deep inside and will help in diluting the cough.

Do not worry. It should be fine back again in 3-5 days.

Hope that helps.

I understand, but I don't feel like it's a common cold- more like allergies. I've been taking Advil but switched to Tylenol today. My back feels like one big knot and slight chest soreness. Really no appetite , but no weight loss! (Boo) Could this be a form of flu? And would an antiobotic help?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be a common cold what we refer to as flu

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. You are talking about the same thing that I have been mentioning. Flu or common cold are viral infections that usually have an allergic component associated. In such a case taking advil once daily for a few days provides relief. Tylenol contains acetaminophen, something that I was insisting you to take.

Antibiotics would not be helpful as the cause is most likely viral where antibiotics are ineffective. You need to be patient. It will take a few days to resolve. The associated symptoms are common to be found along.
