What Causes Unexpected Rapid Weight Gain?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Jun 2014
Question: Hi. I am 41 year old female, I have been gaining weight for about 6 months even though I eat less and less. I have had a cough that seems to come on when I laugh or talk to fast (maybe dries my throat???) but have had the cough since January 1. Went to the doctors and they gave me cough syrup with codeine but it didn't help and I still cough. I have been finding that I loose my breath easier, like just walking down the street I feel tired. The cough doesn't produce anything its just dry and my throat has never hurt from it. sometimes it makes me dizzy. any ideas. The doctor said I would just have to wait it our, but I am concerned now that I feel so exhausted.

Brief Answer:
First rule out thyroid, hormonal & reflux problems

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Hypothyroidism is a common reason to get unexpected rapid weight gain. Get your thyroid function tests done. Hormone fluctuations and water retention often cause such symptoms. An Endocrinologist's opinion should be taken.

2. Gastritis and acid reflux may explain a persistent dry cough and dizziness.

3. Routine blood tests will help rule out anemia (low hemoglobin), diabetes, eosinophilia and other conditions with similar presenting symptoms. Be sure to get a cardiac and respiratory system check, a chest X-ray and regular blood pressure readings.

4. If you snore or have chronic laryngitis with reflux, you would get all these symptoms. A videolaryngoscopy should be done.

5. You may upload the results here. Only after ruling out common conditions should a search for rare causes be made.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
