What Causes Tooth Drifting And Midline Diastema Post Tooth Extraction?

default
Posted on Wed, 14 Oct 2015
Question: Doctor, three weeks after removing one of my third molar on upper jaw, i noticed one of the upper front teeth on the side opposite where the molar tooth was extracted has started drifting forward. i have a big midline diastema. my lower jaw front teeth also protruded forward after i removed wisdom teeth on each side 10-13 yrs ago.

anytime i complained to the dentist in my office clinic, they keep telling me it is the frenum attached to the gum that is pulling the teeth forward? pls advise on what to do as you can see my tooth has just started drifting forward.

Brief Answer:
Go for frenectomy followed by fixed ortho treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing in.

I understand your problem & would like to tell you that extraction is not the etiology of your problem. Extraction never leads to drifting of teeth so early & can never lead to mid line diastema.
Main reason behind mid line diastema can be high frenum attachment or tongue thrusting.Your treatment will depend on the cause. If its high frenal attachment then go for frenectomy. In case its due to tongue thrusting then use tongue crib that prevents tongue from applying pressure on teeth. You should consult orthodontist for complete treatment plan.

Hope I answered your query

Wishing you good health

Thank you Dr XXXXXXX

However, I visited two different orthodontist few weeks ago, one orthodontist told me i need tongue crib and the other said i need frenectomy. am confused. but i think my problem is more if tongue thrusting because all this years i have the large frenum attached to my gum but did not make my teeth drift until i removed my molars.

Brief Answer:
Go for tongue crib

Detailed Answer:
Hi

You need to control tongue thrusting first because if not controlled it will generate continuous pressure on teeth causing further protrusion.Hence you need to go for tongue crib.If problem still persists then go for frenectomy also.
