What causes tiredness and excessive hunger?

Question: I go through periods where I am unable to satisfy my hunger, or quench my thirst. Also, during these times I am very tired and want to sleep. These symptoms will go away after a few days but then will come back in a month or 2 it seems. I consider myself to be relatively healthy and watch what I eat. This has been going on for a while and my doctor doesn't seem to be able to help.

I have not been prescribed any medications for this nor taken any other medications.
