What Causes Tingling, Severely Itchy Discolored Patch On Right Shoulder Blade?

default
Posted on Sun, 26 Jul 2015
Question: Good evening. I am a 5'4", 160 pound 45 year old female. I have a tingling, severely itchy discolored patch on my right shoulder blade. It comes and goes for a few years now and I first thought it was shingles. I am convinced it is nostalgia parasthetica as I have a bad neck and T spine. It did not respond to Famvir but has had some calming with Capsazin cream. Would botox work?

Brief Answer:
It doesn't look like shingles to me as well!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this itchy spot that you have reported. Clearly, it is not shingles and am not surprised that Famvir didn't help. The information provided isn more suggestive of nostalgia paresthetica. However, this is and under recognized and an under diagnosed condition among many physicians. This explains why it is difficult to get it diagnosed by many physicians.

Though he might not have had he diagnosis right, Gabapentin is also used to treat this condition. For this reason, I will suggest that you stop searching for other treatment options at this time and continue with Gabapentin. If this fails to control the symptoms within 6weeks, then we can try botox which is another drug used to manage this condition. Capsaicin is another medication as well.

In all, unlikely to be shingles. Nostalgia paresthetica more likely. Continue gabapentin and only consider botox if symptoms persist beyond 6weeks.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thank you Dr. Ditah. It is as I thought. I will take your advise and use the Gabapentin and only seek out other methods should it not work. I appreciate your time and the work that you do. XXXXXXX

Good morning. The gabapentin worked as follows: the discomfort is gone but not the itching so I continue with the capsazin cream. I'm sure in time that will lessen.
On a positive side note, it cured my insomnia for yesterday. I have fibromyalgia and sleep is limited to two to four hours, four hours being the lesser of the two. I slept nine hours yesterday with four restroom breaks. I was able to return to sleep quickly after each void.
Thank you for your support.
