What Causes Tingling Sensation In Feet And Numbness In Arms While Sleeping?

Posted on Wed, 24 Aug 2016
Question: I am 41, male, generally healthy. Two weeks back I started feeling gentle pins and needles in both my feet, latterly expanding to my arms too. Then I started getting numb arms during sleep. At first I tested for uric acid which was 8.1. Doctor put me on Zyloric 100mg once a day and the uric acidcame down to 5.4 in a week's time. The symptoms didn't improve much. I then underwent further blood work: all came back normal except Vitamin D3 which was 25, and TSH which was 5.1, and Vitamin B12 which was 229. My doctor has put me on vitamin d3 supplements - 5,000 once a week and a mix of calcium, magnesium, zinc and vitamin d3. One week later, not much improvement yet. Do you think the doctor's diagnosis and prescription is correct? How long will it take for the symptoms to ease or disappear? Do you think this is peripheral neuropathy? Can this be treated / cured?

Brief Answer:
Continue medication and get nerve conduction study

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
These symptoms of pins and needle sensation may be neuropathy related or non specific.
For neuropathy clinical examination and nerve conduction study is required.
Is there any sensation loss, weakness, ataxia?
Any history of diabetes, drug intake, toxin exposure, alcohol abuse?
The blood reports are nearly normal and doesn't explain the symptoms.
You can get nerve conduction study and blood sugar measurement if symptoms doesn't improves with these vitamin supplements.
Hope you found the answer helpful.

An internal medicine practioner has provisionally diagnosed this as idiopathic peripheral neuropathy. He has prescribed me Neurobion 3 times a day and Lyriga 75 X 2 for two weeks. do you agree?

No weakness, no loss of sensation, no diabetes history, no smoking, no alcohol. Had glucose intolerance while my weight was 110kgs. Lost 25 kgs five years back and since then no issues. My current HbA1C is 5.5.
