What Causes Throbbing Sensation Around Temple And Ear?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Oct 2014
Question: It feels like my Brain is throbbing (mostly left side around temple & ear area) and feels foggy with headache and "whooshing" sounds that throb to the rhythm of my heartbeat. Also, every once in awhile it sounds like sparks are flying with little bursts of sounds like che, che.....che, che, che....che. I've had this quite awhile (thought it was Tinnitus & couldn't do anything about it), but lately it's Really Bad.

Went to ER because I had Vertigo and felt like I was going to pass out. Cat Scan and Ekg came out normal. They gave me Vertigo med. & codeine 3 and recommended an Ent Doc. I went there, they pulled out a large amount of "wax" from left ear and we thought that was the problem.....I was so happy! Although, the throbbing was still there and the next morning I had another Vertigo episode. I called the Ent & he prescribed steroid/cortizone med. for 5 days.......no positive results.

Went to a Cardiologist & they said my Heart is good.

Also, I had a Bad tooth (molar-upper left) and just had it removed because I thought that might be why I have this problem. Took Amoxicillin (500 mg.) for 10 days, but the Vertigo, etc. happened afterwards. Something just came to my attention when I was brushing my teeth this morning, it seems the dentist did NOT remove all of the tooth, there is still pain and a hard feeling ridge......could that be my problem?

I forgot to mention that I also went to have my eyes checked, with deep photo of Optic Nerve, etc. and they said All is Fine. I look at a computer a lot for work and sometimes when I cannot read something and I concentrate hard to read it, I get a little "woosey", then after I take my eyes away, it's ok. That's why I had my eyes checked.......process of elimination.

Could it be my Air Conditioner, as I've been using it a lot lately? Or, I was thinking it might be Candida?

Nobody seems to be able to Find Anything Wrong with Me!! I really Need to get my Life Back, as I'm afraid to drive and this whole thing is affecting my work.

Thank you for your time in advance and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Best, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Some information for you; need some tests ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Well, from your symptoms it does seem like there could be an underlying cause/condition which might require a diagnosis and proper management.

I would like to ask what kind of an examination and which investigations were conducted by the cardiologist you visited? Did it just include an EKG (ECG) and nothing else?

Based on the information provided I would recommend the following ma'am:

-A Doppler ultrasound scan of your neck region to check on the blood flow (any possible narrowing of major vessels, etc.) as abnormalities in these vessels have shown to result in whooshing sounds heard by the patient and also a constant throbbing either in the region or the regions being supplied by these vessels

-A lipid profile to check on possible increase in cholesterol levels which can result in narrowing of blood vessels which usually results in the whoosing sound

-An MRI of your brain: As you have been suffering from vertigo, it is mandatory for every patient experiencing vertigo to undergo an MRI scan of the brain

-Blood pressure monitoring (preferably an ambulatory device)

These investigations (if not conducted yet) are almost mandatory ma'am, please do not ignore them and get them conducted at your earliest convenience. If at all you have some underlying condition, these investigations should pick it up. But if these return normal, then it would be a great relief.

Constant air-conditioner usage can result in symptoms similar to yours, and I would strongly recommend against the use of an air conditioner for a while or at least reduced exposure. But I doubt the symptoms can reach a stage like yours, just from air conditioner use ma'am. Please get these tests done ma'am, they will be quite conclusive.

I hope you find my response helpful XXXXXXX Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help you.

Best wishes.
