What causes throbbing pain in the neck?

Posted on Fri, 30 Jun 2017 in Digestion and Bowels
Question: Good afternoon,

I have been feeling strange since Wednesday afternoon, and I was hoping you could help me.

On Wednesday, I was blowing my instrument, and I suddenly had this throbbing pain in my neck. It was very intense, I could pinpoint it. It would hit me for a second, then stop, then hit me again, then stop. It stopped after a couple of minutes.

Since then I have had;

- On and off prickly arm sensations. Very mild.
- On and off chest prickly sensations.
- Right chest pain.
- The same intense neck feeling from Wednesday afternoon happening last night after I took medication
- A feeling of a bit hotness everywhere I go
- Itchy skin
- A clenching sensation at times when i breathe
- Mild on and off lower left jaw pain. It seems to have intensified ever so slightly when i would move my mouth around. It has happened twice last night and twice today

A little bit more info: I am 19, and 5ft 8in and in March weighed 270. When I was checked by the nurse in March, she said my lungs and heart sounded fine and healthy.

After going to sleep, it definitely seems to have gotten better until 30min-1hr i wake up.

Any ideas? Hopefully it isnt anything major.

Brief Answer:
Symptoms possibly due to stress/anxiety

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for trusting HealthcareMagic,

The muscle spasms and sensory abnormalities you are experiencing are mostly suggestive of stress or anxiety related.

While going through stressful situations, body induces a stress response which results in shunting of blood and secretion of stimulatory hormones. This can result in muscle aches and spasms, prickly sensations, pins, and needles, tingling, decreased sleep etc.

You can try stress relieving techniques like meditation, daily exercising, yoga etc.
It would be helpful to know if you're currently under stress or experience anxiety symptoms so that I can give you details regarding management of anxiety.

I would also recommend following up with a primary care provider to get blood electrolyte levels and thyroid hormone level checked, as electrolyte and thyroid imbalance can contribute to such symptoms.

Please get back with details regarding the possibility of anxiety or stress in your life, let me know about them in details, in order to guide you more specifically...

I do have anxiety yes. I have had two palpitations and a couple of anxiety attacks in the past year. A lot of stressful things at school.

Im currently at a summer camp, so I dont think I have anything to worry about, but it has been very hot the past couple pf days and this camp has a ton of hills which I am not used to.

I have also been sleeping in a very hot room and have been waking up in the middle of the night once or twice. I dont know if its that.

Ive also been putting more effort into my instrument which maybe is why im sore.

I have been here since Sunday and these cramps have not started until Wednesday

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Since you are in hot weather conditions, there will be more fluid and electrolyte loss from your body. Electrolyte loss can lead to muscle spasms, pain, and sensory paresthesias.

Make sure that you are well hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids. Include fluids containing electrolytes like Gatorade.

While indoor set the thermostat as to keep the room at comfortable temperature.

Regarding neck pain, excess strain on muscle is the cause of pain. You can apply ice and take over the counter pain reliever like Advil (if not allergic) for pain.

Hope I was able to help you
