Question: My son is away at school and called to say he has a problem with his right hand. A vein is bulging in one spot, he has a slight pain and a sense of tingling in the hand. No unusual coloring or lack of function, but he is worried it might be something serious as it has gotten worse in the last days. Thanks for any advice.

Brief Answer:
Your son has inflammation probably due to muscle strain.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM,

Your son has inflammation probably due to muscle strain.

It could be due to injury or even sitting at the computer for long hours.

Till you can see your doctor, I will advise the following---

Apply ice fomentation for ten minutes, followed by heat, followed by a gentle rub with a pain balm. Repeat twice a day.

Keep the hand strapped.

All the best. Regards

Thank you for the advice. Since I sent the question my son texted some pictures. How can I send them?

I think I sent the pictures. Do they change your opinion at all, Doctor?

Brief Answer:
Yes, it changes my diagnosis. It looks more like an infective boil.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for the clear pictures.

Yes, it changes my diagnosis and management suggestion too. It looks more like an infective boil.

Apply Epsom salt mixed in an antibiotic cream and cover with a small gauze and bandaid. Repeat twice a day.

His doctor may consider an antibiotic too.

My second diagnosis will be raised uric acid. The doctor may consider that too.

Thanks very much, Doctor. I think I can tell his mother to relax as it's not as serious as she imagined.
