What Causes Swollen Parotid Gland?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Mar 2015
Question: My parotid duct is swollen (I believe), however I feel no pain. I don't have any swelling in the gland itself. Wondering what the issue might be. Seeing a dentist on Monday. Thanks

Brief Answer:
I will suggest you stay relax until you see the dentist on Monday!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I have revised the attached image. I will say I am unable to tell whether this duct is swollen or not. It is usually not visible to the naked eyes unless something abnormal is happening. It difficult to tell if that is happening with this image. To make the diagnosis of a swollen duct, feeling is very important. Your dentist would try to do that when you visit him. Also. If there were a problem with this gland, I am pretty sure that you would have been in some sort of pain. The absence of pains means we may not be running into huge trouble and can actually take the time to understand what is happening before acting.

For now, I recommend you stay calm. Drink much water and vegetables so that any secretions would be fluid enough not to cause blockage or to dislodge any stone that may be blocking the ducts.

I hope this helps clarifies your doubts. Keep me updated when you talk to the dentist. I wish you well and thanks so much for using our services. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
