What Causes Swollen Painful Labia Majora?

Posted on Mon, 15 Dec 2014
Question: Hi, I have had a swollen labia majora (right side) and pain for 2 days. I am sleeping with someone and we are unprotected (but monagimus). And I have PCOS and have had hidradenitis suppurativa under my armpits and groin area before. It feels like a round lump that is painful in my outer vaginal lip. Could this be herpes?

Hi
Thank you for query.I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query.
I have gone through the details. Please send clear photos if possible of lesion.
If single lesion it is unlikely to be herpes. It may be bacterial infection like folliculitis, or cyst.
Please also send details like symptoms, duration, exact site, partner history or symptoms, intercourse history etc.
You can get back for any clarification.

Its like a pea size lump that i can feel more internally...like its trying to come out. I am sexually active, one partner who is moganimus. No sore or blister on it anywhere. Seems to be resolving, no more swollen vulva or pain

Brief Answer:
Not herpes.Bacterial infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.
It is a single inflamed lesion. It does not appear like herpes. It is a bacterial infection .It may be folliculitis or glands infected.Unlikely to be cyst as it is painful and resolving.
Clean the area with warm water twice daily.I would have suggested topical antibiotics like mupirocin and antiinflammatory analgesic like brufen. If persists oral antibiotics may be needed .
You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you
