What Causes Swollen Foliate Papillae On The Back Right Side Of Tongue?

default
Posted on Sat, 2 Aug 2014
Question: i have two or three swollen foliate papillae (I think) on the back right side of my tongue. They are somewhat movable, no pain, and the one in the front is a bit firm to the touch. It also has a small white pimple looking thing on the upper side of it. Also curious about the hole below the first folliate flap you can see in the picture. It is 2 or 3 millimeters deep, is soft to the touch, doesn't have hard edges or borders, isn't crusty, doesn't bleed, and the only pain I have noticed is from poking around in it. I will note as well that I do get pain in my mouth, throat, and tongue from time to time, but I figured it was from my seasonal allergies. I smoke about a pack of cigarettes a day too. I would just like to know if the swollen papillae and hole could be a viral or bacterial infection, std, allergies, or some kind of tumor or malignancy.

Thank you :)

Brief Answer:
proliferative lesion on the right tongue base.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your query.
As per the photo what u have sent, it's a proliferative lesion seen in the right tongue base.
It's not viral infection or bacterial infection or allergy .
std or malignancies has to be ruled out by a biopsy of the lesion.
If I were your treating doctor, I would have advised for biopsy of the lesion, depending on the report, I would treated you.
If it's std, then would refer you to dermatologist.
If it's malignancies, then I would refer you to head and neck oncologist.
It's it's nonspecific inflammatory growth, then I would suggest triamicilone paste for local application +anti oxidant tablet.
hope my answers have helped you. Thanks.

ok, thank you for your response. In your professional opinion, does it look like a cancerous growth? What is your best guess as to what it could be?

Brief Answer:
Hello.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for your follow up query.
In my opinion, just by seeing picture we cannot diagnose.
Clinical examination is necessary.
The growth doesn't look like cancer growth. But still until examined can't diagnose.
Only biopsy can detect it.
