What Causes Swelling Over Clavicle?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Oct 2014
Question: I am a nurse anesthetist just so you know. today i noticed aome swelling just over my left clavicle it is painless, soft and superficial it feel like fluid or fatty tissue it is just at the base of my neck over the sternocleidomastoid like where you would puncture for a IJ cantral line and it extends down to the clavical. The only PMH of relevence is that I had a stroke 3 years ago from a clot in my left MCA. I am not hypertensive nor have any heart disease. Doppler studies at the time of my stroke revealed very clear carotids. The stroke, they concluded; was a fluke and the result of a hot stone massage that included a lot of rubbing the stones over my neck. They said it appeared on MRI to be a small piece of plaque which was surprising as I had so little evidence of atheroscerosis on Dopplar Anyway the lump is kind of flat and wide, not nodular at all and my lymph nodes aren't swollen or painful

Brief Answer:
it can be alipoma or a cyst

Detailed Answer:
I have studied your case and I think that there are following possibilities.
Hi,

1. It can be a Lipoma. It is benign fat tumour which is not dangerous and it needs to be removed only if it is causing pressure symptoms on underline structures like pain, nerve compression.
2. second cause can be a cyst which it a tumour filled with fluid. It can be excised or aspirated.
3. It can be matted lymph nodes, due to infection. Though It is least common. It can be flat also.
I would suggest you following investigations to confirm the diagnosis.
1. Ultrasound of the neck will tell us if it is solid or cystic tumour.
2. FNAC is a needle test which can give us histopathology of the cyst whether it is a fat, fibrous tissue or a lymphnode.
So get these tests as soon as possible.
I hope this answer will be useful for you. Let me know if there is any other followup questions.
thanks
