What Causes Swelling On The Palm Side Of The Thumb?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: I have a swelling on the palm side in the middle of my thumb. The skin was so tight that it started to lose feeling. I inserted a hypodermic needle into the swelling and penetrated a sheath before I got into the cavity. Upon removal of the needle I expressed a gel-like substance that came out like tooth paste. The gel was translucent, yellow-orange and the swelling receded nearly to normal. Two weeks later the swelling is starting again. What should I do or whom should I see?

Brief Answer:
It is a cyst and needs surgery to obliterate the cavity!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this lump that you have reported. I have reviewed this information fully and this is probably a synovial cyst. The fluid that got expelled was from the cavity. Because the cavity still exists, it has recollected again. Surgery is needed to remove the fluid and close the cavity so that it cannot recollect any longer. Also, upload an image for review but am not sure this will change anything from the above plan.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.
