What Causes Swelling Of The Salivary Gland?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Apr 2017
Question: On February 23 I went to urgent care with a right sided very swollen salivary gland. It hurt to open my mouth very wide. On the 28th the whole back of my neck was stiff and very painful. Oxycodone didn't even touch it. I was put on Augmentin. I still have the problem with my neck. After three visits to the ER and one overnight stay in the hospital, the problem still exists. I have been put on Valium, Flexeril to no avail. I finally got in to see an ENT and he got some yuk out of my right parotid gland, gave me prednisone and Keflex. He ordered a CT scan with contrast of my neck, but waiting for insurance to approve. Any advice?

Brief Answer:
Right side parotid abscess

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You seem to have had problems with parotid gland that is a major salivary gland in the cheek. THere was abscess in the gland because of various reason unknown or only known after CT report.
Initially it was treated with antibiotics which was actually not the standard way of treating it. Abscess should always be drained and that how the ENT did it.
Now the abscess is drained it would sooner to be healing fully.
So do not worry now.

What about the neck problem? This has been going on for over a month. Without prednisone I have terrible pain and cannot turn my head. CT of sinuses was negative.

Brief Answer:
Abscess affects entire general health including muscular spasm

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Abscess is a serious infection if left untreated. It becomes systemic affecting all the general health of the body including the large muscles. There are chances that the neck pain may be related to it as well.
To rule out the spondylosis which is very common at this age get an Xray of the cervical spine first both the lateral and AP view and in flexion. Get this reviewed by your primary care.
You may need massage therapy coupled with physical rehabilitation by MD.
