Question: My husband is taking Lasix for nephritus . he is takin 160mg and he still has swelling in his ankles , feet and lower legs. He thinks his body might have gotten immune to Lasix. Is that possible ... would another brand help him?

Brief Answer: May need other measures Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX Thank you for sending in your query. Swelling on the legs indicates excess water and salt in the body and lasix helps to get rid of this through urine. A good way to know if the lasix is working is to check your husband's weight every other day. He should lose about 0.5 kgs every other day till the swelling disappears completely. If your husband's swelling is static or getting worse (which can be confirmed objectively by monitoring his weight); it is possible that he may be resistant to lasix. In such a scenario changing the brand would not help him. However the following measures can be tried as add-on therapies: 1) Restricting the salt intake to less than 4 grams per day 2) Restricting the fluid intake to 1-1.5l/day 3) We can increase the dose of lasix in consultation with your nephrologist 4) We could add another medication known as metolazone which helps in reducing the resistance to lasix 5) The most preferred therapy would be to treat the cause of nephritis if possible. You could discuss this with your nephrologist. I hope this was helpful. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions. Regards Dr Bhabhe
