What Causes Swelling Of Foot Only While Sitting?
Question: Hello Doctor
My friend's wife had met with an accident 5 yrs ago. She had fracture in foot and the skin of the foot also got damage. She had undergone through drafting and a wire had also been inserted in her foot at that time. Now she is fine and walk easily but she gets swelling on her foot if she sits for a long period of time. When she takes rest or sleep for sometime the swelling gets disappear. She has visited to number of doctors. Doctor said it will be cured with time by itself
Doctor i have following questions
1. What is the reason of this swelling on foot?
2. Is there anyway by which it can be treated permanently or will it be cured by itself with the time?
3. Doctor As we know human body weight lies on Legs and Foots and as she has a wire in her foot Will it create a problem for her in near future if she gains weight due to pregnancy or any other reason?

1. The appearance of swelling only on sitting that disappears with resting is related to the posture. It can be a normal finding. She can decrease her salt intake and see if it helps. This is not suggestive of any pathology as there is no associated pain and it decreases with rest.
2. She can keep her feet elevated on a pillow while resting and avoid sitting on a chair with feet hanging down.
3. A wire used for fixing bones will not create any problem in future even if she gains weight. Also, she must have healed completely by now. In case she has any problem, then the wire can be removed through a small cut.
