What Causes Swelling In Thumb After A Nail Fall Off?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jan 2016
Question: My left thumb is healing. My nail did fall off, and I was told it could take 2 months to six months for the new nail to grow in. My thumb is still slightly swollen, but the shiny tight skin is gone so I can bend my thumb. So far, the Xrays came out okay. I am trying to find a topical oxygenation machine at a local clinic. Either TOPT or TOT, as I sense it may help the wound heal faster. http://www.inotecamd.com/about-natrox.
This USA government website on advanced wound care has a section on Topical Oxygenation Therapy that I found interesting and maybe helpful for me: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK132244/
Any suggestions about this?

Brief Answer:
It's helpful but not for you

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I am Dr Mittal.
I have read your message.
I think I can help you.
The hyperbaric oxygen and topical oxygen have been known to be good for healing.
It has long been known that healing is better.
However, there is no known role in the growth of the nail.
That's what I surmise is your primary concern.
Also , reading your query the injury seems to be healing already.

So overall I don't think it would be needed for you to get the device.
I have tried to make it as simple as possible. I hope that the information contained in this message will be able to help you find the best solution for your problem.
Best of luck. Dr Mittal.

Would Topical Oxygen Therapy help prevent a fungal growth nail, or fungus/bacteria growing on the nail bed? Would it help improve oxygenation and blood circulation in the nail bed?
