Posted on Sat, 12 Nov 2016
Question: I have had swollen ankles daily. I am 34 overweight. when I saw my dr about this she
was not very concerned based on XXXXXXX

l bloodwork. I had seen a cardiologist for an unrelated matter and they never mentioned any heart issues that could be causing this. my dr prescribed a low dose fluid pill but told 9me to watch it since my blood pressure was normal on case it went too low. I have not taken it because i was afraid. i should
mention that elevating at night does not help. what else could cause this and what do you suggest I
coukd do other than f fluid pull to help.

Brief Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX welcome to HCM,

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX welcome to HCM. Swelling in ankles can be due to various causes---heart, kidneys, raised uric acid, liver failure etc. Your doctor seems to have ruled them out. Since you have not mentioned it, I am assuming it is a painless swelling.

And again, since you do not have pain but are overweight, it could be venous. Do you have dilated veins in your legs?
Please rule out a thyroid deficiency if not already done so.
I will suggest you take the diuretic half tablet alternate days and see if the swelling goes.
Also strap your legs/wear venous stockings and see if it helps.
If there is pain--it could be Rheumatoid or raised uric acid. Please revert back. Regards

Brief Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX treatment for dilated veins is exercise and weight reduction

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX treatment for dilated veins is exercise and weight reduction to improve muscle tone (muscles pump blood upwards and prevent blood from stagnating in veins leading to swelling); and compression with stockings/elastocrepe bandages.
Medication may be required in severe cases and rarely surgery. In your case, exercise, weight reduction and compression should work--regards
