What Causes Swelling In Right Lip After Taking A Novocaine Shot?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: I am a white 68 year old female. My right lip is swollen like I had a novacaine injection. In addition I have a swollen right upper eyelid. I was visiting PA this weekend for a family wedding. On Sunday, before my flight home to Oregon, my right low back and lower abdomen became excruciatingly painful as well as nausea. I was admitted into the hospital and was treated for right kidney stone as well as an Atrial Fib reaction to all the pain. So, I was discharged from the hospital yesterday but was on a lot of antibiotics during my stay. My Atrial Fib resolved quickly and the kidney stone resolved.
Is it possible my swollen right upper lip and eyelid is a reaction to all the antibiotics I had in the hospital?? I am a retired physical therapist and do not have symptoms of a stroke.
Any ideas about this dilemma, Just took 2 Benadryl and 1 tyelonol.

Brief Answer:
probably allergic

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

since there is no sign of infection on your face, the most likely cause is allergy. Any drug may cause that, so it's not easy to say which one is the offender. Lisinopril for example may cause angioedema. The most profound effect of angioedema is facial swelling. More serious event may follow like respiratory failure due to airway lining swelling. Taking an antihistamine sounds like a good idea.

The best course of action at this point is to review the necessity of antibiotics and the rest of the drugs you take (particularly the ones you started recently) and do any feasible adjustment to your regimen. If you feel a lump in your throat or shortness of breath then you should visit the emergency room immediately. If fever develops the plan will have to be changed...

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!
