What Causes Swelling In Ankles?

default
Posted on Mon, 16 Jun 2014
Question: I have gained about 15 pounds in the last year. My ankles swell up when I fly in passenger jets. My ankle socks are tight at the top of the elastic. The tissue around the top of my socks is indented and my legs appear swollen at the ankles.

Brief Answer:
Need examination & Investigation

Detailed Answer:
Dear friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

This description is typical of excess fluid accumulation in the body
Gain equivalent of 10 % of more of body weight, it is manifest as swelling (oedema)

There are several causes – Heart failure / Kidney impairment / Liver disease / Venous insufficiency – from clot or weak valves (Varicosity) / low protein levels...

See an Internist / get yourself examined / investigations are often necessary...
ECG & ECHO for the heart / Lab tests & Ultrasound for Kidney & Liver - function & Structure

Since you have no other complaints, the most likely cause is likely to be local – venous insufficiency… Doppler study will confirm...
And the prognosis is likely to be excellent…

Take care
God bless
