What causes swelling and large bruise behind the knee and on the ankle?

My husband's right calf, knee and ankle have swollen. Today the area is turning red and there is a large bruise behind the knee and on the ankle area. He has been on a low dose of prednisone for quite some time.

Please provide us with some answers for a diagnosis. 1)is the swelling painful? 2)Is it warm? 3)is there any symptom like fever 4)Does it form a pi when pressure is applied?
