What Causes Sudden Throbbing Pain In Eye And Head Along With Watery Eyes?

default
Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: I woke up from a sound sleep and had a sudden pain in my left eye as if someone hit it with a hammer from inside my head, it lasted at a debilitating level for 30 to 60 seconds, my eyes watered, my left eye became red and my left side of my neck and face was tingling. I was suffering a headache afterward, my eye is still aching and I feel as if I'm about to get a migraine. I am 51, obese, with a history (female) of HTN, non-medicated hyper cholesterol migraines, treated with zonisamide 300mg Q hs, celexa 60mg Qam Provigil 150mg 1 tab bid (narcolepsy-chronic fatique/fibromyaligia-this is a rule out for 13 years) and Proprananol I believe is at 160 and it is long acting. I also had elevated heart rate by history it would get up to 190 or 200 while I slept. I am mildly active swim 1-2x week 1/3 of a mile to 1/2 mile. I take Maxalt and aleve for migraines Xanex 0.5 1-2x per week at HS if I am kicking my husband in my sleep. I don't smoke and I drink 1-2 drinks per month

Brief Answer:
CT and angioCT recommended asap

Detailed Answer:
Hello. I have been through your question and understand your concern.

The symptoms and the modality of these symptoms you are describing, unfortunately makes me think of Cavernous sinus involvement, which is a venous structure behind the eye, It might also be an acute angle glaucoma which represents as well an emergency, or just a simple Migraine attack, but in first place I would think of a Cavernous Sinus involvement. A carotid cavernous fistula or a cavernous sinus thrombosis represent an medical emergency. This should definitely be ruled out if these symptoms persists.

That is why, I recommend a cranial CT and angioCT as soon as possible.

Wishing you good health, please feel free for further quesitons.
