What Causes Strep Throat With Rashes On The Buttocks In A Child?

default
Posted on Mon, 26 Dec 2016
Question: My 7 year old son is prone to Strep Throat (he is high functioning Autistic). He rarely complains of pain in his throat, so I am constantly checking his neck glands and asking him if it hurts to swallow. I looked in his throat and saw some little white dots (but throat doesn't appear to be red and inflammed) and sure enough, I think he has some swollen glands. He has no fever and has had a cough (kind of deep- and in the morning mostly) for a couple of weeks. He has also had this weird rash on his buttocks (red, a little raised, a little dry looking and almost the size of an iPod). It took some high powered ointment to clear it up, but I am not sure that it isn't coming back. Is the rash and the throat related and should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
No need to get concerned

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern. I do not think that the rash and Strep throat are related. A careful clinical examination and correlation would be needed but that is beyond scope. If it clears up you need not worry. I do not think that you need to get concerned.

Should I take him in and have him tested for strep? Like I said before he has no fever. Can you have strep and not be running a fever or do the two symptoms always go hand in hand?

He has those two little white spots....if it isn't strep...are those something to worry about?

thank you

Brief Answer:
Gurgling is the mainstay of treatment

Detailed Answer:
I do not think that you need to do that. Gurgling with lukewarm water is the mainstay of treatment and irrespective of whether it is due to Strep, gurgling is likto provide relief. You need not worry.

I decided to take him to the doctor yesterday just to be sure that he does not have strep. Test came back negative and he had drainage making his throat sore and causing the cough. Told to give Mucinex. Same child woke up in the middle of the night running a high fever and vomiting. His younger brother is also running a high fever and vomiting and has a red itchy rash mostly on legs (front of thighs) and arms (anticubital space and on forearms). But also on stomach area. Now are we talking strep or just a virus? I wouldn't be as concerned except we have had a weekend getaway planned and I need to know what to do here - to get my boys well so they can go - or to cancel it. thank you

Brief Answer:
Likely to be a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. It is probably due to a simple viral infection. Such an infection usually lasts for 5-7 days irrespective of treatment. If their physical condition permits, it would be no issue to go for the getaway as planned. But if it can be put off for a later date, probably it would be a better idea as the illness might otherwise get in the way of enjoyment.

Thank you for your quick response.:)

And You were right on with the first bit of advice. I just decided to take him knowing we had this trip coming. Wanted to start any treatment if there was any to be had.... Hope you weren't offended by the fact that I went ahead and took him in to see his pediatrician. :)

Detailed Answer:
Not the slightest bit offended. Rather, in case of any concern it is always good to obtain a medical opinion from a doctor who can directly examine the child. Clinical assessment is important.

Gurgling with lukewarm water is the mainstay of treatment. Give paracetamol or acetaminophen to your children if the temperature is raised. Hopefully, the fever would subside in 2-3 days although it would not be surprising if it lingers on for 5-7 days.
