What Causes Stomach Pain Post Swimming In Children?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jul 2015
Question: Dear Doctor

Unfortunately, my daughter is sick since 5 days due to stomach pain / infection.

We had actually taken her for swimming and she swallowed a lot of water. That same night she started developing pain in stomach / abdomen.

However I am not so sure if the pain is due to swimming pool water or something else.

She had been going to her nursery too and the kids are now using baby potties.

We took her to the doctor and she is prescribed the following:
1. 5ml per day Enterogermina
2. 5ml x 3 times x daily Maalox

The first day when she started the medication, the symptoms seemed to have reduced, but from second day they got aggravated. she is again complaining of stomach pain, not eating, running a slight fever at times. I have got an appointment today but your inputs would definitely help.

Brief Answer:
It seems to be due to mild gastrointestinal infection or urinary infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to the HCM

I completely understand your concerns. Swimming pools water can be source of bacterial, viral or protozoan infections in children. Also, unhygienic toilet seats can be a cause of urinary tract infections. Stomach pains with fever can occur in gastrointestinal or urinary infections.

I would recommend you to get her urine and stool -routine and microscopic examination done.

Since cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis spread from intake of swimming pool water and can present in similar ways, I would recommend you to start her on Syp. Nitazoxanide for next 3 days along with the enterogermina and Maalox she is already taking. Keep her well hydrated by regular feeds and fluids. Give her acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever episodes and repeat the dose every 6-8 hours if fever persists.
If stomach pain is severe, you may give Syp. Meftal spas. But do not give more than 3 doses in a day.

Hopefully this will help. I would be happy to help you with any further questions.

Take care
