What Causes Stomach Pain, Diarrhea And Vomiting?
My husband has been having episodes of stomach pains, diarehha and some vomiting. Within the last 9 months he has had 4 maybe 5 of these episodes. Only one time was there a fever. The last doctor he went to said it was acid reflux. He has been on the acid reflux med for a little bit now, but is having an episode today.
I don't trust that the doctor is doing enough to figure out what is wrong because this happened about 10 years ago and the doctors kept dismissing him with irratible bowel syndrome. On a particularly bad day, my husband went to the emergency room and they found a tumor tying his instestines into a knot.
My husband told the current doctor about that situation 10 years ago and the current doctor did a CAT scan I believe to make sure it wasn't that again.
Is there anything else you can think of that we should test for? I just feel like this is another case where we are being dismissed again and something is really wrong. Any suggestions on how we go forward with getting more help?
Thank you, XXXXXXX
Some tests must be done.
Detailed Answer:
Hello!
Thank you for the query.
Acid reflux does not give diarrhea. So this is wrong diagnosis for sure.
According to his symptoms, he should have:
- abdominal CT to rule out pancreas issues including inflammation
- gastroscopy to rule out celiac disease
- stool test and stool culture test to rule out possible intestinal infection
- Rifaximine treatment should be tried for some small intestine bacterial overgrowth
- colonoscopy (if all mentioned above test do not diagnose the problem) to rule out inflammatory bowels disease
- and finally CT enteroclysis for possible small bowels invagination, narrowing
As you can see there is a lot to be tested. IBS or acid reflux can not be blamed for such symptoms. I suggest him to find good gastroenterologist who will guide him through diagnostic process.
Hope this helps.
Regards.
