default
Posted on Sat, 7 Feb 2015
Question: Hello,

XXXX is 5 years old. He goes to potty every other day and most of the time passes hard stool. Otherwise he is normal but we want him to be in normal routine as we believe since he does not go potty everyday he does not eat well.
Also, recently, he had stomach cramps which subsided after he vomitted for 2-3 times.

How can we ensure that he passes normal stool and is able to pass them on regular basis.

Thanks,
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Ensure adequate intake of water

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to
Healthcaremagic Greetings of the
Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Following are cause for baby not passing stools regulator passing hard stools

1. Decreased intake of water

2. Decreased intake of fiber in diet

3. Consuming diet which has refined wheat flour ( Maida ) like Bread , Biscuits, wafers

4. Inadequate potty training or spending less time

5. Being restricted to indoor activity

I would suggest you the following

1. Ensure good intake of water : it's very difficult. But can be done. Follow rule if 1 which I advise. 1 cup of water 1 hour before every meal and 1 cup of water 1 hour after every meals will ensure adequate intake of water

2. Thorough examination from Pediatrician to rule out local anal pathology

3. High fiber diet : 2 servings of vegetable salad and 2 servings of fruits especially citrus fruit will ensure adequate intake of fiber

4. Avoid bread , Biscuits

5. Laxatives like Lactulose 5 ml twice a day for 15 days

6. Potty training : Fix 30 minutes preferably in morning for passing stools

7. Outdoor games and activities
