What Causes Stomach Bloating And Gas?

default
Posted on Mon, 14 Apr 2014
Question: Hello, I was recently in the hospital with kidney stones and while I was in, I explained the severe bloating and gas pains I had to them. I actually look pregnant and usually have a lot of fast moving bowels(the nurses even agreed I looked pregnant and that it wasn't normal, HAH). Years ago I was checked for crohn's and colitis, but no one has an answer for me. They've just started me on Bentyl, does this relieve severe bloating and gas? I can't seem to escape it; no matter what foods I try or what I drink and its been like this for years and it just seems to be getting worse. I've tried everything and anything from vitamin stores (probiotic defense, gluten defense, bloat-x, etc...) and stopped taking it all about a week ago after 3 or 4 months of being on it to see if it would make a difference. Can Bentyl make my situation worse or help me in some way?

Brief Answer: ... Detailed Answer: Hi.... Thanks for writing in. Were you examined by a gastroenterologist. Was a colonoscopy or gastroscope done? The possibilities with bloating and gas are indigestion, gastritis/acidity ,irritable bowel syndrome etc. Sometimes ovarian pathologies can also cause similar symptoms. If you were evaluated by a gastroenterologist and nothing much showed up on the scopy, the diagnosis is more in favour of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Bentyl (Dicylclomine) generally helps in IBS. I would advise you to do regular exercise ....30 minutes a day 5 days a week. Sign up for yoga classes which will help you feel better physically . Maintain a food diary everyday to see which food aggravates and which food decreases the symptoms. Then you will know which food to definitely avoid. Eat frequent small meals rather than 3 large meals a day. Hope this information has been helpful to you. Do get back to me if you have further queries. Regards, Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan

Thank you for your help, I appreciate it. Do you think I should wait a couple days before taking Bentyl? That way all the pain meds can get out of my system and I'm extremely constipated from all of it, which is complete opposite of what I usually am. Can Bentyl cause more gas and bloating? My daughters been worried about me with my ovaries because I've had polycystic ovaries and am in pre-menopause.

Brief Answer: ..... Detailed Answer: Hi there, In your case the bloating and gas could be due to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or premenopause. I feel you should take Bentyl as early as possible, since it might help reduce your symptoms. Also do follow the measures I have mentioned in my previous mail regarding exercise, yoga etc. Drink enough water as it will help reduce symptoms like constipation. Also it will help prevent recurrence of kidney stones. Regular periodic emptying of the urinary bladder is a must. Empty your bladder every 3-4 hours. Hope this helps. Get well soon :) Regards, Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
