Posted on Mon, 14 Aug 2017
Question: I have stinging and burning inside of my mouth and on lips and tongue that has been going on for three months. Amosan did not help. My dentist says my tongue looks normal though I see some light colored areas. My mouth is most sensitive to hot, spicy food and liquor. Gums have some receding.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for consulting HealthcareMagic.
This is Dr. Priyanka tiwari answering your query.

I have read your query and understand your concern. As far as stinging and burning inside mouth is concerned this can be due to dry mouth, side effects of medicines, oral infections like thrush, diabetes, deficiency of iron and vitamin B12 or neurological problem etc..

Can you please upload/attach an image of your tongue, that will be more helpful for me. I would like to know a few more details so that I can guide you better...

-Do you have a dry mouth or any white coating in mouth?
-Do you have any medical problem or are you on any medication?
-Is the inside of mouth have any sores or inflamed mucosa?
-Do you have any known allergies?
-Do you experience acid reflux or symptoms of heart burn and sour liquid coming to mouth with acidity?
-Do you have any numbness inside mouth over tongue, lips etc?

Please revert back with these answers..waiting to suggest further.

Thanks

1) -Do you have a dry mouth or any white coating in mouth? No dry mouth; the top of my tongue has a slight white haze. The inside of my cheeks have light colored areas on top of what looks like scar tissue.
2) -Do you have any medical problem or are you on any medication? It seems that my problem began when I began taking saliva-soluble Melatonin.
3) -Is the inside of mouth have any sores or inflamed mucosa? No! See #1 above.
4) -Do you have any known allergies? Yes, but I don't think this is my problem.
5)-Do you experience acid reflux or symptoms of heart burn and sour liquid coming to mouth with acidity? No! I do take Pantoprazole to reduce acidity.
6) -Do you have any numbness inside mouth over tongue, lips etc? No!

I have gone through your answers. As far as burning sensation and stinging is concerned it can be due to drug induced, nutritional deficiency or neurological problem .

For this i will suggest you few measures now gargle with numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine to relieve burning and pain..
Do cool water rinses..
Suck ice pops.
Take multivitamin supplements.

Follow these measures and If symptoms persists then consult your physician for Melatonin drug you are taking . As Symptoms might be drug induced .

Hope this will help you .
