What Causes Sporadic Chest Pain In Children?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Jun 2014
Question: My 8 year old daughter has been having sporadic chest pain. The cardiologist says she has the heart of an athlete, which is great, but she's still having the pain. Usually the pain comes in the evening while she's at rest but today it was while she was trying to jump rope. Wondering what our next step should be? What else should we be checking?

Brief Answer:
Can be muscular pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Since all the cardiac causes have been ruled out by her cardiologist there is no need to worry. This is likely to be a muscular pain. mild viral infection in the lungs is also possible in case there is any associated shortness of breath.
Taking rest and mild pain killers like Tylenol should help her.
In case the pain is persistent then do get her serum electrolyte levels evaluated. Taking electrolyte rich fluids like Garotade along with water will also help.
I hope this answers your query.

Thank you for your reply. She has had this problem since Nov. can muscular pain last that long? Can the pediatrician request the test for serum electrolyte levels or do we need to ask the cardiologist?

Brief Answer:
Yes. It can persist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
A muscular pain can be persistent if adequate rest to the muscle is not provided. Her pediatrician can request for serum electrolyte levels evaluation.
Hope my answer is helpful.
