Brief Answer:
Hi and welcome

Detailed Answer:
there are several possible causes of liver enlargement and most common are hematologic diseases, liver diseases chronic infections, methabolic diseases. Other causes are rare such as tumors. If there is low thrombocyte count, anaemia, pain due to size of spleen, suspected tumor or lymphoma or spleen abscess, then splenectomy should be performed and this is simple and routine procedure today which can be done laparoscopically. It has minimal consequences such as increased risk of pneumoccocal infections but it can be prevented with vaccine. No other significant consequances can occur. But, most spleen enlargement are temporary and require no surgical treatment and it may resolve spontaneously when certain infection passes. Respiratory infections are rarely cause of splenomegaly but some other live or systemic infections can cause it. Wish you good health. Regards
