Brief Answer:
It is normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for your query.

I need to know a few more details about your child's symptoms.
Does he have any medical condition in the past?
Was there any complication during pregnancy or child birth?
Is the child lagging in growth or development in any other way like weight gain, activity level etc?
Does he take adequate diet?
Is he taking any medicine?

Most of the time children learn to speak with time and adequate exposure. It is ok for a 3 year old to speak only a few single words. When they join school, they learn to speak very quickly. At home you can spend some time in teaching your baby a few new words every day. Otherwise help of speech therapist can also be taken. But I personally observe that children learn from other children.

Waiting for your reply.

Brief Answer:
Multiple issues but nothing serious

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

To summarize, the issues that the baby may be dealing with are:

1. effects of jaundice
2. nutritional deficiencies
3. effects of tongue tie
4. effects of mothers hypothyroidism (if she had low thyroid during this pregnancy)

None of these problems are serious. The delay in speech is most probably due to tongue tie. A few sessions with speech therapist will be helpful. Other issues may have contributed somewhat to the speech delay.

I suggest that you get the baby's basic tests done like complete blood count, thyroid profile, vitamin B12 levels, liver function test, kidney function test.

Regarding diet, children never overeat. They mostly eat whatever they want to. It is nothing to be worried about if the weight is ok. If you tell me his weight I will be better able to suggest. Give him hygienic food and cleaner drinking water.

Dr Vaishalee
