What Causes Soreness On Adam's Apple Of A 9 Year Old?

Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: My 9 year old grandson had a sore to touch Adam's apple yesterday and today it is pink. He is otherwise fit and well with no other symptoms. His family physician has examined him - checked glands in his armpits, groin etc.- found nothing and has arranged an urgent appointment with a paediatrician who he thinks might do a blood test and an ultra sound scan. Needless to say we are really worried and would like to know what these tests are looking fo.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have carefully gone through the details provided by you. Let me assure you that in case of a child approaching puberty, such changes are not unlikely. Although it is certainly good to be clear about what it actually is, it seems to be an inflammation due to the rapid growth of the Adam's apple. The blood test will help in identifying any infection, if present. An ultrasound will help in finding any anatomical abberations, if any. I doubt if there is anything to worry about. Steam inhalation and gurgling with lukewarm water should provide relief.

Hope that helps.
