Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: chronic sore throat since XXXXXXX ....treated with several antibiotics so not bacterial,,...throat sorness moves around....sometimes lower right at base of tongue, sometimes at roof of mouth, sometimes whole neck feels swollen......my ENT did several checks with the nasal scope and did not see anything.....she ran a ct scat that were inconclusive except for asubtle asymmetric promienence of the posterior rt tongue noted amidst dental instrumentation artifacts.....she want to do a biopsy but I have had a c4/c5 fusion and know that this can be a risky procedure..... there are no lesions...if she cant see anything with the scope and the anomaly at the base of my tongue may be masked by dental work....Im worried the procedure will screw up my C4 C5 FUSION WHICH IS 7 YEARS OLD AND CREATE ADDITIONAL MORE SEVERE PROBLEMS.....Is there a blood screen for possible throat cancer....or is this cancer at all.....never any fever, lots of postnasal drip, and heavy congestion in bronchael area....I do smoke please advise with your thoughts dan

Brief Answer:
Biopsy of the lesion is mandatory

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.
Soreness of throat not responding to any treatment needs to be investigated.
There can be a possibility of malignancy, since, it is not responding to treatment.
I am afraid there is no blood test which can detect cancer of the throat.
However, smoking is associated with increased incidence of many malignancies like cancer of oral cavity, cancer of lung, cancer of bladder, cancer of pancreas, etc.
The prominent asymmetrical lesion at back of the tongue could be due to some neoplastic lesion.
A biopsy is necessary as this is the gold standard test to make a diagnosis.
You need to consult your ENT specialist to perform the procedure in such a way that the fusion of the cervical vertebrae does not interfere with the procedure.
Investigations for other lesions can only performed after ruling out possibility of malignancy.

If you have more queries, I will be answer.
