What Causes Sore Throat, Cough And Headache?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Sep 2014
Question: I just used my daughter's albuterol - .083 inhalation through nebulizer (about 30 - 40 mins ago) and I am taking Prozac for anxiety (10 mg daily). I had a fever on Monday with headache, earache, sore throat and cough. Today, no fever but headache and sore throat from coughing. At times the coughing got so bad it would trigger my gag reflex. Then this evening my lungs started to itch really crazy and wheezing a little. That is why I used my daughter's albuterol but didn't think to check on any side affects with my Prozac. So far the only thing I'm feeling is shaking legs when standing/walking, nervous feeling and drowsy. Is there anything I should be concerned about? AFTER I used it and started to feel a little shaky I checked out the internet and found that there could be issues with combining the two. It has been couple of days since I've taken my Prozac.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Suspect Upper respiratory tract infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear. Thanks for giving me an opportunity to answer your query.

Looking at the symptoms that you have quoted it is mostly likely an upper respiratory tract infection.Congestion of the throat causes irritation and results in cough.Since the lining(mucosa) of the throat, nose and sinus are in continuity you are having headache(due to congestion of the sinus).

Since how long have you been taking Prozac?
Drowsiness, shakiness, shivering and unsteady walk are side effects of Prozac.Suggest to consult your doctor if they are disturbing your routine. These can be minimized by titrating the dose after relevant clinical correlation of the symptom control.

Albuterol is a bronchodilator(commonly used for asthmatic conditions) and it does not relieve throat infection.Suggest to stop Albuterol.
I were to do an ENT examination and do a chest X-ray.
Advise salt water gargling 2-3 times a day.
I were to start on antibiotics(Azithromycin) and decongestants/antihistaminics (Pseudoephedrine hydrochloride/Chlorpheniramine maleate) which will relive infection and congestion of throat.

Do you have history of asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease?
Albuterol and Prozac can be safely used and do not have any drug interaction.

Hope this answers your query.
