What Causes Soft Mucousy Stools After An Initial Period Of Diarrhea?

Question: Hi

I started suffering from soft mucousy stools after an initial period of diarrhea then I had thin stools, lots of tiny stools that came out very fast and then lighter browny yellow stools. This went on for 4 or 5 weeks. I saw my doctor and he sent me to a specialist who did a sigmoidoscopy and found nothing. He said that as I have no pain and he checked my stomach for pain and lumps and I have not seen any blood in my stools that it was unlikely that I have bowel cancer. But he said that to be absolutely sure I could have a colonoscopy if I wanted. I have been experimenting with my diet and found that it is affected by fatty foods and so if I have fatty meat it gets more loose. I tried a fibre supplement but that did not make it better and made me gassy and didnt stop the mucous and changed stools. However I found that a combination of eating white rice and a gluten free diet with a little fibre and no fruit or veg and being relaxed on a recent holiday enabled me to on 3 or 4 occasions have a normal bowel movement with no mucous. I gave also found that eating really slowly and not eating too much and late at night also helped bulk up my pooh. Is a sign that it is a dietary issue related to ibs or somthing like gluten intolerance as surely if it was bowel cancer diet would make no difference? Or does bowel cancer effect what you can and cant eat as well? The other thing I wondered is if I have some ulcers as I do suffer from anxiety and have had a lot of stress recently however I dont have any pain. I would rather not go through an unecessary colonoscopy if I didnt have to and the specialist didnt insist on one but gave me the choice. Does diet affect things if you did have bowel cancer?

Brief Answer:
As explained in details.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history of the past about piles, dermatitis, the provided under the heading of Medical History, the present problems, your observations/experimenting with diet and the Specialist consultation and sigmoidoscopy.

I would like to discuss as per your questions you have asked above and try to explain too:
*Is a sign that it is a dietary issue related to ibs or something like gluten intolerance as surely if it was bowel cancer diet would make no difference?
> To find out whether this is a dietary issue related to IBS or is an intolerance to gluten or anything else can be found out only by stooping and starting certain foods/beverages as this is always a subjective thing ans every patient's presentation will be different in regards to the diet.
In bowel cancer diet usually does not alter anything unless it is one that causes obstruction. (the chances increase with high fibers in cancers that cause narrowing of the lumen).

*Or does bowel cancer effect what you can and cant eat as well? / Hi.

*Colonoscopy and other investigations like:
CT scan of the abdomen
Stool tests on three consecutive days
Tests of blood related to the routine, liver functions, thyroid function and others as per the clinical evaluation.
all would help to rule out certain diseases and help to confirm that you have IBS.
The mainstay of the IBS is the control of the stress and/or anxiety; additional medicines which may need to be given by permutation and combination as may be suited and helpful for control of your symptoms.
Since your problem is increased with fatty foods, you have to curtain the fat and fatty/oily foods.

I hope this answers your query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you need to or if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
