Posted on Thu, 15 May 2014
Question: Hello, am having endoscopy on Monday. I had colonoscopy in July, was given versed, Demerol and Benadryl. Procedure was at 3:00 at 10:30 pm I was asleep on couch, husband tried waking me by calling name and shaking., couldn't wake me . He said I was snoring very deeply. I did wake up on my own after about 15 minutes. I felt like I was in a fog for two days after and had panic attack. Do you think it was the combo of medications. I am very apprehensive to have any meds.

Brief Answer:
Demerol is the cause...

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

I have gone through your query and I understand your concerns.

Endoscopy is a difficult procedure and to make this examination procedure easier for the patient, tranquilizer medicines such as Demerol are recommended.
Initially, Demerol has a good effect for the patient because this medicine relieve anxiety. But later its side effects such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, hallucinations(like in your case) are appeared.
Those feelings that you have experienced are caused by Demerol, because this are the side effects of this medicine.

Ask me for anything unclear.

All the best.
Dr. Behar.
