Posted on Tue, 14 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, I have a small black lump in my neck. It came like 4 weeks before with a medium size lump which was paining (i thought it was dude to body heat) and slowly the size has reduced and now the pain is not there but the lump size has reduced to small and its persisting for some days now. Now I keep touching it and i keep checking it every hour and i see its still the same. I used to shave daily and is there any issues with it?

Brief Answer:
It looks like a Sebaceous cyst.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, it looks like a Sebaceous cyst.
The black colour is due to punctum, a characteristic feature of Sebaceous cyst.
In my opinion, you should get it excised completely by a Surgeon and send it for histopathological examination ( Biopsy ). Exact diagnosis will be confirmed.
It is not Cancer.Do not worry.
There are no medicines or Ointments for this.
Surgical removal is the only option. It is a simple procedure which can be done under local anaesthesia. There is no need for hospitalisation.
Hope I answered your query.
If you have any questions, I will clarify further.
Wish you good health.
Regards

Thanks doctor for the answer.

I am worried as in last 2 years I got in 3 places and it took 6 to 8 months to get it completely cured by itself. Below is the detail steps on how it comes and goes automatically.

Steps:
It starts with a small plump (like heat boiled plump) with a little pain. In few days the pain gets reduced and the size of the plump is also reduced to very small ball shape (very small I can say) and it will be pain less.

It will continue to reduce for many months (also i would like to say that I shave my face everyday) and near by areas gets itching sensation as well.

after 6 months or so I can see the plump will be completely gone and the skin will be normal.

This is the case happened to be for last 2 years with plumps in 3 places in the neck. Now this is my 4th plump and this as well started as a heat boiled plump with a pain and slowly it reduced its size and now its small in the neck. Now I want to understand the cause of this issue if its infection or any other major problem that is causing the issue.

Since I see the plump is dark, i was little worried if its a cancer as I read somewer a cancer plump also will be dark which made me worried to think negatively even though i came across these plumps for last 2 years.

Need your suggestion please.

Brief Answer:
Biopsy will give exact diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, it looks like you are getting the Sebaceous cysts over the hair bearing areas of head and neck ,and they are getting infected.Once the infection is subsided, the swelling is reduced in size .Later, the contents of the cyst will come out through punctum and it disappears completely.
These cysts are common in hair bearing areas. If they are infected in the head and neck region, the source of infection could be from the nose.
I give Clindamycin capsule 300mg thrice daily for 2 weeks to my patients with similar complaints.
If possible, please attach the pic of the lesion.
As they are recurring, get it removed surgically and send it for histopathological examination ( Biopsy ).
Nothing to worry.
It is not Cancer.
Wish you good health.
