Question: My son is in college and has had a difficult time falling asleep and staying asleep. It usually takes him three to four hours to fall asleep and then wakes every two hours throughout the night. He's had mono twice in high school. He just had a bad pancreatitis that we are hoping is healing cause the Mayo clinic said some of the body of the pancreas died and we are hopeful for it to heal itself. Two years ago had nissen fundoplication surgery at mayo clinic. He complains of not being able to sleep and not sure what to do from here. appreciate any suggestions. His health does worry him and the family

Brief Answer:
Medications can be helpful.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your son's symptoms. He most likely has insomnia, which is getting aggravated due to anxiety and worries.

He would benefit from medications such as zolpidem sustained release tablets (Stilnox), which can ensure sleep for 6-8 hours. In addition, he may also require anti-anxiety medications such as escitalopram and clonazepam.

Other than medications, he may also benefit from regular exercises, avoiding stimulants such as coffee or tea in evenings, having dinner two hours before sleep time, and maintaining a good sleep hygiene (going to bed at same time every day).

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
