What Causes Shifting Strain Between Right And Left Jaw?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,

I am having strain in my jaw which reaches out to the temple. Last night it was on the left side of the face and today it is on the right. Its not high in intensity but it has been there since last 2 days.

I had suffered from mumps 10 years back and the pain is similar to that. Kindly suggest if this could be the possibility.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
You are most probably having Temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX ,
Thanks for the query.

I have read your query , reviewed your medications and understand your concern.

After reading your clinical history it appears that you are most probably having Temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

Mumps is less likely since antibodies develop after initial infection , prevent further infection of mumps virus.

If I were your treating Doctor for this case , I would advice you

anti inflammatory analgesic Paracetemol + Ibuprofen combination twice daily after food ,

For the jaw related problems, you will have to follow some simple measures which are as follows -
1) Do not open your mouth wide.
2) Avoid side to side movements of the jaw. It puts a lot of pressure on the joint.
3) Avoid all kinds of hard and chewy food.
4) While yawning, support your lower jaw with your hand.

Continue Allegra & Eltroxin . Avoid Nise, it is banned drug .

You can discuss this with your treating doctor.

Hope this information helpful to you .If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.
Regards.

Thanks for the reply doctor.

It would be great if you could help me with understanding the cause and severity of the same. I am also having knee ache in my left knee. Could all these medical conditions be related and is there something I can do to prevent these in future ?

Also can I take Ibugesic plus as an anti-inflammatory drug?

Also please let me know how much time it could possibly take to heal.

Brief Answer:
It may be because of Psychological stress or Degenerative joint diseases .

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for the follow up query.

There are 3 main cause for temporomandibular joint dysfunction or Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome:
1) Degenerative joint disease, where arthritic changes result in degeneration of the articulating surfaces.
2) Psychological stress - Pain is secondary to events such as nocturnal jaw clenching and teeth grinding. Treatment is focused on behavioral modification as opposed to joint repair.
3) Internal derangement (ID), where the problem lies within the joint itself, most commonly with the position of the articulating disc.

In your case, it may be because of Psychological stress or Degenerative joint diseases. All these medical conditions could be related.

I would also advice consult orthopedic for knee ache to rule out degenerative joint diseases. Blood Investigation like CBC, ESR & x ray are needed.

For prevention as explained in my previous reply,
1) Do not open your mouth wide.
2) Avoid side to side movements of the jaw. It puts a lot of pressure on the joint.
3) Avoid all kinds of hard and chewy food.
4) While yawning, support your lower jaw with your hand.

Yes, you can take Ibugesic plus twice daily after meal.
It may take 7-10 days to heal.

Regards.
