Posted on Mon, 14 Sep 2015
Question: Hi, I have been getting stabbing pains in my head usually right side that comes and goes..very scary and stops me in my tracks. My right eye also gets blurry/cloudy and watery that also comes and goes. No headache , fever, or any other issues. Do I need to go to ER? It's been going on for 4 days now. I have thyroid disease and that's all my medical history. I don't feel I'm under stress .

Brief Answer:
Possibility of trigeminal autonomic neuralgia

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
As per your description the diagnosis seems to be Short-lasting Unilateral Neuralgiform headache attacks with Conjunctival injection and Tearing (SUNCT) which is a type of trigeminal autonomic neuralgia.
This usually occurs for seconds to few minutes.
It is usually precipitated by touching, washing face, spontaneous also.
Treatment: Lamotrigine, pregabalin, gabapentin, topiramate can be tried.
You should consult a neurologist at your place.

Another possibility with unilateral pain and blurring of vision of short duration may be acute glaucoma.
It is painful sensation around eye with redness of eyes, colored halos and dimunition of vision. For this consultation with ophthalmologist is required.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

So I shouldn't be concerned about a stroke, tumor, or a bleed? Sorry googling stuff can be scary :) will this go away on own? It's been 4/5 days and it's scary. Doesn't happen when washing or touching face. Why is this happening ? What is the cause?

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be tumor or stroke

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
According to your symptoms it's very unlikely to be a stroke or tumor.
Severe unilateral periorbital pain and redness with watering and blurring of eyes may be due to SUNCT or glaucoma.
You need to consult an ophthalmologist or neurologist for proper examination and advise.
It's unlikely to go on its own.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
